What's Actually Involved in Diamond Grinding a Garage Floor

Diamond grinding is the single most-skipped step in budget epoxy installations and the single biggest predictor of long-term coating failure. If your contractor isn't grinding to ICRI CSP 2-3, you're not getting a real coating job — you're getting a paint job that will peel.

What Diamond Grinding Actually Does

A planetary diamond grinder uses 200-400 pound machines fitted with industrial-diamond-impregnated metal bond pucks. The pucks rotate against the concrete at 1,000-1,800 RPM, removing the top 1-3 mm of slab and exposing fresh, profiled concrete underneath.

The result is a surface that looks slightly rough to the eye, with visible aggregate and uniform texture. That texture is what gives coatings something to mechanically grab onto. Coatings on smooth, sealed, or acid-etched concrete don't bond — they sit on top, like masking tape on a glass tabletop.

The ICRI CSP Profile

The Concrete Surface Profile (CSP) is a published industry standard from the International Concrete Repair Institute. It runs from CSP 1 (smooth, like polished marble) to CSP 9 (rough, like fresh shotcrete). For epoxy and polyaspartic coatings, the right profile is CSP 2-3 — opened pores, uniform texture, no smooth spots.

Reputable contractors carry ICRI CSP comparison chips and test the prepped surface against them. If your contractor doesn't know what CSP means, that's a red flag.

The Equipment

A real diamond grind for a 2-car garage uses:

  • Walk-behind planetary grinder (Husqvarna, Lavina, or similar) — 200-400 lb, 3-phase electric or propane
  • Edge grinder — handheld 5-7" grinder for corners and edges where the planetary can't reach
  • HEPA dust extractor — captures 99% of silica dust at the source (OSHA requires this)
  • Multiple grit sets — 40 grit for first pass, 80-100 for second, sometimes 200 for the final touch

If a contractor shows up with a small angle grinder and a shop vac, they're not equipped for the job.

Dust Capture

Concrete grinding produces respirable crystalline silica, a regulated occupational hazard. OSHA's 2017 silica rule requires HEPA-rated dust capture at the source. Reputable OC contractors use grinders with vacuum shrouds connected to HEPA dust extractors; the dust is captured into a sealed bag, not blown into your garage and your neighbors' yards.

If your contractor is grinding without dust capture, they're violating OSHA and contaminating your home. Walk away.

The Steps

  1. First pass — 40 grit: Removes any prior coating, sealers, or surface contamination. Opens the slab.
  2. Crack and pit repair: Now-exposed cracks get V-cut and filled with polyurea. Spalls patched flush.
  3. Second pass — 80-100 grit: Levels the patches, removes any remaining loose material, achieves CSP 2-3 across the whole slab.
  4. Edge work: Hand-held grinder profiles edges, corners, and around posts.
  5. Vacuum and verify: HEPA-vac the entire floor; check CSP profile against ICRI chips.

A 2-car garage takes 3-5 hours of grinding. A 14,000 sq ft warehouse takes 2-3 days.

How to Spot a Contractor Who Skips It

Red flags during quoting:

  • Quote doesn't itemize "diamond grinding" or "surface preparation" as a line item
  • Contractor talks about "acid etching" instead of grinding
  • Time estimate for a 2-car garage is under 1 day total
  • Price is suspiciously low ($1,500 or below for a 2-car polyaspartic system)
  • No mention of ICRI CSP profile or moisture testing

Why It's Worth Insisting On

Industry data on coating failures consistently traces 80%+ of them to inadequate surface preparation. The coating chemistry itself is rarely the problem. If diamond grinding adds $400-$800 to a 2-car garage quote, that's the difference between a 20-year floor and an 18-month floor.
